There will be no Sunday service at Urbana High School on Sunday, January 25 due to inclement weather and the closure of all Frederick County schools. We will gather again on Sunday, February 1.

Study Groups

"And Jesus came and said to them, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.'" Matthew 28:18–20

A disciple of Jesus is simply someone who, having been saved by Jesus, is following after Jesus and helping others to do the same. To be a disciple necessitates the posture and practice of learning; being a student. Study Groups at Grace Church are a part of our small group ministry and act as one expression of our joyful commitment together as God’s people to seek to grow in our knowledge of God and application of His Word to our lives.

Our Study Groups meet in the spring and fall and provide a specific context to give focused attention to the Word of God and specific theological topics, with the intention of fostering relationships while deepening our knowledge of God, what He says, and how we are called to live.

Spiritual Depression: Its Causes and Cure by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones - Jason Briggs
Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones once wrote, "In a world where everything has gone sadly astray, we should be standing out as men and women apart, people characterized by a fundamental joy and certainty in spite of conditions, in spite of adversity." If joy and confidence in Christ are essential to our flourishing and our witness, then an important question follows: How do we fight for faith and joy amid the adverse conditions around us—and within us? This study group will explore those questions together through four chapters of Dr. Lloyd-Jones’ classic collection of sermons, Spiritual Depression: Its Causes and Cure. Each session will focus on practical, gospel-centered themes, including: Learning how to preach the gospel to ourselves, understanding our emotions and how they can be transformed, benefiting from the fatherly discipline of God, growing in true Christian contentment. Come join us as we open our Bibles and seek to grow in resilient faith, deep God-centered joy, and confident hope in Christ.

How Then Can We Live? by John Loftness - John Loftness
Finding our place in the world can be confusing because the broader culture we inhabit has very different priorities than we do, but we often unconsciously adapt to the world’s ways. In this course, we’ll discuss the contents of the book I developed that includes reflections on how we are to live in the world where God has placed us. In particular, we will consider how the world seeks to mold us in its ways and how we are to put our priorities on two households—the family household and God’s household, the local church.

Remember Heaven by Matthew McCullough - Chris Mays
Through our discussion of Matthew McCullough’s Remember Heaven, we will help each other cultivate a heavenly-minded perspective to our lives here and now. McCullough uses Paul’s exhortation in Colossians chapter 3 to set our minds on things above where Christ is to help us understand how the hope of heaven can and should shape every aspect of our lives, especially in a world that is filled with distractions and focused on the here and now. He shows how the promise of one day being with Jesus reframes our understanding of the suffering of this life and our mission and life together as the church.
